Mitchell, SD / La Crosse, WI
A nice and relatively peaceful day spent mostly in the car. We went clean across the State of Minnesota, stopping only to rest at a rest area on the edge of a corn field (practically the whole of what we saw of Minnesota is a corn field)! Motorbikes continued to stream past us Sturgis bound. Mostly Harleys. A Honda went past and B was amazed, “no noise”. We stay tonight in La Crosse – possibly the last remaining room in the whole city. One hotel clerk informed us, when G inquired as to availability, that they knew of nothing available in a 50 mile radius as it was a very busy weekend with a jazz festival, dog show and of course the Sturgis pilgrimage.
La Crosse is a particularly pleasant and picturesque little place on the banks of the massive Mississippi. We dined at the quaintly named “Piggies” – an historic downtown restaurant. The hotel was decorated with carved bears on the outside and all in all a quite congenial spot.
What worked for us traveling with young children and an old dog :
It’s difficult to be too rigid with your planning, flexibility is key because young children and old dogs are highly unpredictable. Call ahead when you have a reasonable idea of how the day is looking to book a hotel, especially in peak season.
