DAY 3

Coeur d’Alene, ID / Butte MT

We drove through beautiful scenery today – glittering lakes and blue mountains – Big Sky country gave us a dazzling visual welcome.

We stopped in St. Regis, MT, apparently a region home to various white extremist movements.  I got a feeling the people in this neck of the woods would be hard-pressed to point out Portland on a map (on either side of the country) but would also not feel any need to.  This area seems so far removed from the rest of the country and I suspect that the inhabitants would quite like to keep it that way.  We picnicked in a fabulously shady spot under the big sky.

Large fields of grazing, free range cattle; driving through the Bitteroot Mountains were real highlights of the day.

We are staying tonight in Butte, a nondescript, rather rundown old mining town.  The Red Lion Inn has a swimming pool where we splash off the dust.

What worked for us : Traveling with Children

You listen to music, you think about the future and sometimes they meld together.  Our wish for our children from the dusty Montana trails through the Bitteroot Valley from John Denver …….. Give him a fire in his heart, give him a light in his eye, give him the wild wind as a brother and the wild Montana skies.
